Halls is a vertically integrated sub-tropical fresh produce business with global reach.
More specifically, Halls specialises in the growing, sourcing, packing, ripening, distribution and marketingof quality sub-tropical fresh produce, with a focus on avocado.
Our expanded product suite includes mango, litchi, lime and pecan in addition to an ever-expanding range of other sub-tropical exotics and associated product lines. Halls has over 1,200ha of orchards under management, with operations in 4 countries and annual sales of more than 6.5 million cartons of avocado.
Our business is based on the strong values and long-term partnerships that we share and build with all our stakeholders: our employees, our shareholders, our grower partners, our communities and our customers. Driven by the pioneering spirit embedded in our DNA, we continually seek ways to exceed their expectations.
With over 125 years of being in business, we are still 100% family-owned and a member of the HL Hall & Sons Group. Long-term sustainability is not only our legacy, it is the essence of who we are.
Hugh Lanion Hall founded the business in 1890 on the banks of the picturesque Crocodile River in the then Eastern Transvaal, a sub-tropical area that is now part of the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. At the time, farming in the hostile Lowveld was unheard of and the skeptics predicted his early demise. But HL Hall persisted against all odds and his mixed agriculture business grew steadily, to be incorporated as HL Hall & Sons in 1921.
In the 1940s Halls became well known for offering the first mail order delivery service of fresh produce via the railways to households across South Africa. The company also gained a reputation for contributing substantially, through schools, clinics and housing, to the welfare of its employees long before the phrase “corporate social investment” was coined. By the 1950s Halls was recognised as one of the largest producers of citrus in the Commonwealth. Halls had acquired more than 40,000ha of agricultural land, and in the next 10 years diversified its products and services, adding timber, tobacco, fruit processing, honey, a feedlot, an abattoir, game farming, and irrigation engineering to its fruit and vegetable core offering.
The 1980s saw a change in focus for the company as businesses were consolidated and avocado replaced citrus as Halls’ main export crop. In addition, the foundations were laid to leverage the company’s significant land assets when Nelspruit was named capital of Mpumalanga in 1994.
The need to diversify its revenue base let to the business establishing an investment arm in 2004, building an investment portfolio with a mix of both majority and minority stakes in established businesses and start-ups.
Halls’ pioneering and adaptive spirit is evident in a family business that has not simply survived, but has flourished for over 125 years. Today the vertically integrated fresh produce business participates in the full value chain, with a focus on ripe & ready products to meet the changing needs of the consumer. However, Halls’ “soul remains in the soil” as it retains a firm foundation in farming.

- Approximately 7,000 ha of owned and leased agricultural land with 1,200 ha of irrigated orchards under management
